Television: How I can mock it and love it at the same time.

Can I poke fun of something? Just a smidge?

I thought television took a closer step towards deterioration when I witnessed Madonna and Lady Gaga wrestle on an episode of SNL. Lady Gaga’s folle couture makes Elton John’s costumes of yesteryear look about as creative as a jumpsuit from the Federal Pen. That skit seemed positively Golden Globe worthy compared to the recent news Jersey Shore has been renewed for a second season.

Now, I will admit something. This is a situation in which experience does not a better judge make. I have not seen the show.  I have also never eaten a cow carcass I found in the woods. And I don’t need to in order to know, that isn’t going down easy. From the brief news snippets I have seen, I don’t need to see the show.

From one photo alone, I haven’t seen this much orange since my last trip to Home Depot. They have clearly spent the past decade soaking. Soaking their innards in MadDog 20/20 and their exteriors in some type of bronzer which appears mixed from Sunny Delight and Buffalo wing sauce. Is that spray tan? Then someone needs 20 kinds of refund.

Oh, MTV, I thought you stopped ingesting inhalants long ago but I am clearly so very wrong. Because MTV agreed to contract negotiations when cast members wanted a face off regarding salary. They are getting paid????? I thought the only person who made money from drinking, punching people, and having sex was Eminem.

And the cast is making 10K per episode. Which by my calculations is $9,999.99 over current market value. Maybe a guilty pleasure for some but can't I just send you some chocolate?

And since all of the cast members except for one are from New York, I have one comment. Poor, poor New York. When given the choice, David Paterson probably paid MTV to film it elsewhere. Just when you think Joey Buttafuoco will be the biggest clown a state has ever seen. WRONG again.  Is there a DBag meter powerful enough to calibrate this show?  I admit I watched the first season of Joe Millionaire so I am not so lofty that I can't confess to watching crap tv but Jersey Shore is a show where a woman gets punched. In her face.

Apparently, none of the cast members have parents who own or watch television because I can't fathom what my own parents would say. And if you like the show, don't be mad at me. I am not making fun of Twilight!

And, like any relationship containing highs and lows, TV knows when to give it to me good. TV gave me a smile on Grammy night. Surprise visits from a rock legend like Stevie Nicks and the duet between Elton and Gaga kept it interesting. And I fully admit to dancing in the living room to Imma Be. But for those of you who missed it, this clip was a highlight of the night.

You may not be a fan of this performer, but I found the vocals, and the Cirque performance such a stunning departure from her gritty moto-cross bar-fight protocol. I already like the song but this performance was incredible.

And don't forget, I Jimmy Choo. Do you? Contest ends February 10.

Wow, I haven't even ever seen a preview for that show. But there are so many, many bad shows out there, that I'd be hard pressed to pick which is most abysmal.

It's such a mystery to me that so many people are clammering for their 15 SECONDS of fame that they're willing to prostitute themselves for it. I don't just mean that show, which I've never seen, I mean countless shows on TV since the age of reality TV.

My knee jerk, 52 year old reaction is ALWAYS, "Their parents must be so proud." Oy.

Like you, I don't need to see it to know exactly what you're talking about - we have precisely the same sort of sh*t in the UK and my reaction is the same as yours... they get PAID for doing this????

That Pink performance.... I had to close my eyes... It was WAY too many butts in my face!! Not to mention Pink's hooo-ha spinning around.....

I've never seen the show either but am so tired of seeing that cast everywhere. The best was the other night on Access Hollywood when they showed two of the Dbags getting ready to go to the grammy awards by getting a spray tan and one of them said "I've never gotten a fake tan before". Excuse me? Are you saying that your skin is naturally the color of orange? It is amazing to me that people want to watch this crap. Although, I do watch the Bachelor so I probably shouldn't judge! :)

All the reasons you listed is why my ?TV is generally tuned to TBN 24 hours a day. I occassionally like Dr. PHil and the news. Thursday nights is Antiques roadshow and then CSI and the Mentalist. Other then that TBN it is..

Pink's performance was awesome.

OK They pulled the video but on your recommendations about TV I think I am going to do a fistful of drugs and go all Elvis on mine. I am thinking maybe the .357 on the older one and maybe .38 for the flat screen.

i'm a big fan of jersey shore. i'm married to a true 1/2 italian and he was hesitant at first, but now he loves the show, too. the cast is famous. mtv is putting them everywhere, like, red carpet in LA to meet Leo DiCaprio, morning shows, and the craziest location...NY Fashion Week. i heard the whole gang will be attending fashion week. i can only imagine how they are all gonna dress for the shows. "G.T.L., Baby!" take care.

I've never watched Jersey Shore either. I don't feel compelled to either. What little I have seen on other shows lets me know, it is just bad.

Pink's performance was so AWESOME (as well as her voice)!!! I have to go watch it again!

Awesome performance. And I'm struggling to accept that you danced in the living room. Is there video evidence?

Television was called a vast wasteland in 1961. So what would you call it now? Perhaps a vast trash heap! I've never seen Jersey Shore, but then I lived in South Philadelphia for a time, so I doubt that I need to. About the only thing I watch on television anymore is Big Bang Theory and Bones. Oh, and guilty pleasure - American Idol. Kathy

Vinomom said...

I don't pretend to have any moral highground, but these television reality shows just really turn my stomach.
Why would anyone want to be filmed acting like complete white trash? They know that shit's on national television right?
I've never watched it either, but I saw a similar such crowd of guidos on a booze cruise in Aruba. I admit to watching them throughout the night, in fact, it was hard to take my eyes off of them. So I get why it is a guilty pleasure for some, as you say. Still, it makes me sad for the downward spiraling standards of American Television. (Which I guess is why I don't watch much of it)

Emily said...

I'm so with you on that show. I've never seen it but I can tell you with absolutely certainty; it is less than crap. And don't you dare make fun of Twilight. ;)

I would love to hear you make fun of Twilight! It would probably be awesome.

I have never watched JS and have no interest in doing so. I only allow myself to watch 2 hours of TV a week and I am not going to waste it on garbage.

I saw my first commercial for JS this week when during arare moment I was watching MTV. I kinda accidentally got into the last few episodes of Teen Mom, mostly because nothing else was on and I was curious about the one couple who gave their baby up for adoption seeing as I am the mother of an adopted child (some of the girls will be/are excellent mothers given the circumstances though.)

Yeah, I couldn't believe JS and that's without actually seeing a single episode. There's reality tv and then there is that...

My reality picks: TLC based - Ace of Cakes, Little People, 19 Kids and Counting, That's reality tv for me!

I admit that I love to watch the bachelor; I love Grey's Anatomy, The Practice, Deperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, Modern Family and the Big Bang Theory. But Jersey Shore and the Housewives of Any City I just can't tolerate. Amazing that these people are paid to do this stuff!

Mrs. Plank said...

Great writing! Jersey Shore is a stupid stupid show. The only depiction of Jersey I have ever enjoyed was the Sopranos. Other than that, I just can't stand the ridicockulous amount of genuine idiots.

Since kid programs dominate our household and my ability to answer any television or movie questions for the last 10 years will cause me much embarrassment when I finally do make it as a contestant on Jeopardy, it is good to hear that I am really missing much.

TV does have some really dumb shows. And I am guilty of watching some of them. Mindless drivel after a day of stats and figures can help decompress!

I loved that performance! Thanks for sharing.

African American Mom said...

Never seen the show either but I hear we are missing out. Somewhow, I am still not inclined to watch it. Sometimes we are better off not knowing.

I kept hearing the hype about the Flavor of Love Show. One day I turned to it and then I was hooked on the crap for the whole season. After the first season went off and I saw rerun I was thoroughly embarrassed at myself.

It's tha tfeeling you get when you remember you used to watch the Jerry Springer Show. You feel yuck for helping their ratings.

I can't/won't watch Jersey Shore. It amazes the amount of bad "reality" tv shows there are. Sadly, people obviously watch these, or there wouldn't be so many. It's such a waste of time!

Andrea said...

I watched a few minutes of that show not long ago. It's like a car wreck, you look because you can't look away. But you must keep driving! What a waste of time! I think I prefer to waste my time watching reality shows on Bravo! ha!

As as for that stupid show, everyone and their brother has been talking about it, but I just can't bring myself to watch it. Why do we celebrate idiots? It is seriously beyond me....

Jersey Shore is pretty terrible. I admit to watching a few episodes (but it was to make fun of them). I really shouldn't give it the ratings it doesn't deserve though.

I'm totally against all trashy reality shows, but am totally embarrassed to say that I got completely suckered into Jersey Shore. I'd been hearing about it for months and accidentally caught a few minutes while flipping the channel while MTV was doing a marathon right before the finale. I watched like 6 episodes back to back. It was riveting! (I'm so ashamed!!!!)

For the love of god THANK YOU. I am so happy to hear that someone else can't stomach Jersey Shore. So many people love it for some reason and I just don't get it.

In a recent magazine interview the little one with the duck face in all her pictures actually said that she considers herself a role model. I didn't know whether to laugh or have a migraine.

Unknown said...

You're not missing A THING by having not seen the show. What baffles me is that they were at the Grammy's, I mean REALLY?!?! I don't know how low-brow, trash television "stars" end up rubbing elbows with the likes of Elton John, Gaga, Beyonce, etc.

Having seen Pink live in Seattle, I can tell you she's an amazing live performer. She actually does sing live (and admittedly messed up a few times.) She seems to have a cute, unapologetic personality and I left the concert a fan whereas before I didn't really care.

I love Pink, but I really have zero interest in Lady Gagme. I mean, I am so put off by her. I very rarely have that kind of animosity towards anyone, but for some reason she makes me think of Marilyn Manson, and he's the only other celebrity I can say I just find so distasteful I refused on sight to like anything about him or his music. Sometimes, people just strike you that way I guess.

There's one from NJ and one from Rhode Island in there too I believe. Eff me, how do I know this crap?

I don't get it at all. Why would you want to contract the same people for the next season, especially when they're being such divas? How much more of the same shit can people take? I'd have fired their asses and got a new set of attention whoring guidos in to embarrass their culture on national TV. You know that those guys from the current season all are pretty much caricatures by now, so next year they're going to script the hell out of that show to make it even more outrageous otherwise it'll just be more of the exact same boring nonsense. Reality my ass!

I always feel like I need to shower after that show. Of course I still watch it. Makes me feel better about myself. :)

Stephanie said...

I will admit, I'm guilty of not only watching, but enjoying Jersey Shore. I am not ashamed, but I am thoroughly amused. I love watching people crash and burn. Add to that my four years dealing with people like that, and you have instantly made that show something I watch to feel better about myself...especially after a hard day. I'm younger than or the same age as most of them, and already I'm settled down and have a pretty decent job. That in itself is enough to make me do backflips after watching. Ha!

I do love your critique. It's all entirely too true to life. If you had actually seen the show, you couldn't have depicted it better!

Anything Fits A Naked Man said...

Yeah, I don't get it either. When do you suppose we'll stop rewarding bad, boorish behavior in this country? Haven't we all had enough? I'm officially done with reality TV, it's gotten far too out of hand.

My hope it that there are some really witty, well-written sit coms out there that are hopefully helping to bring back the medium. My personal favorites this year are Modern Family, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, and The Office. The sad part is, all of these fantastic shows combined probably do not drive the viewership that Jersey Shore does.

Sigh! That makes me a little depressed! I guess that makes me old!
