In-flight entertainment

Thankfully our son loves music like U2, Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, and Coldplay. Thankfully Apple made an iPod in which I can upload many hits from the above plus countless others which help make traveling with a toddler significantly easier. On the plane, he listened to the best playlist ever and was quite content. And when he tired of that, he could watch various videos on it too. It was a 4.5 hour flight each way to and fro Seattle. Content = very, very good.

But, this does not rule out some in airport shenanigans...trust me.

While in line for security, we do what we are required to do...off go the jackets, out come the laptops. I am not going to dicker over the TSA rules, believe me. While perhaps it may be some people's airport initiation, the majority of travelers in the US are aware that the removal of shoes is also a requirement. Guess who did not know? The entire group of people in front of us who got RAILED on my the TSA agent. First timers to the busiest airport in the US of A? Oh no... They were flight attendants. He yelled at them twice for overlooking an obvious rule they are required to do in virtually every airport in America.

When they got sent back, our son yells YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF.

Haha. I love it when a two year old calls you on the carpet.

While on the plane, our son was slightly enamored with the woman behind us who informed us she has ten grandchildren, and two great grand-children. As I have stated before, you can spot those with a proclivity towards kiddos a hundred miles away when you are traveling.

This kind woman was delighted to talk to our son. At one point, I turn around to ask her something and she is sticking her tongue out at him. I kind of laughed, in an odd way I am sure, and she said, "Oh, we were just playing with each other's tongues."

Ummmmm. What? And yes, I know that is not exactly what she meant.

And our son says, "That's not nice to stick your tongue out at people."

Haha. I love it when a two year old calls you on the carpet.

And then the woman one row over and up had a hacking fit of coughs. Sorry, I must have left my SARS mask on tram. Do me a little favor, and cover your mouth?!?! I am not shopping for Swine Flu just yet. But she just hack hack hacked away. Thanks.

And then my son said, "She didn't cover up her cough mouth."

HAHA. I love it when a two year old calls you on the carpet.

And when we were returning home, we hit some turbulence so the Captain turned on the fasten seat belt light. Minutes later a flight attendant came on to remind everyone to remain seated. Because clearly, people do not listen.

At this time, my son is asking for a snack. I waited as long as a could but weighed potentially crabby child with a potential head jarring should my rise to the overhead compartment be timed with an extra rumble of turbulence. I decide to quickly rise and grab his snacks positioned strategically at the top of my bag. As soon as I get up, our son says shouts
YOU NEED TO SIT ON YOUR BOTTOM MOMMY!

Because clearly, people do not listen.

HAHA...ummmm, what? Apparently I don't love it when a two year old calls you on the carpet.

JohnnyMac and the flight attendant certainly did love it.

And this is true in-flight entertainment.

Our two year old son = 4
Grown ups who should clearly know better in all of these instances = 0

  1. Ha haaaaa! I love your son! He's a very wise boy.

And such cool musical tastes at just 2! You've taught him well.

If only all kiddos were so well behaved!

Good to have you back J-Mac!

  2. I never had the pleasure of traveling with my girls when they were young but even at their age now, we have to have the ipod and requisite toys. lol..

Your son sounds like a real trooper. I also read the post you linked too and it sounds like he is a seasoned pro.

I remember flying as a small child (prop planes yes) and the flights were terminal...my mom knew what to do and we never complained.

You can sit with us JennyMac, where you off to next.
    xx

  3. However, when he gets in school, his teacher will LOVE him because he will be the ONE child following directions!!!!!!!!! I'm jealous already of that teacher!

  4. Nothing beats being called out by a toddler!

I remember my son saying to me, after the person whom he greeted good morning in the elevator did not greet nor even acknowledge his greeting, "I guess his mommy didn't teach him manners." Children can be very astute.

  5. I love it how kids say exactly what's on their minds!

  6. This is a fine example of why I am not The Flying Man. (or the parent of toddlers.)

  7. Flying with kids is ALWAYS a trip, but having him say that to you was pretty funny! U2, Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, and Coldplay, do you live in our house?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. That is hilarious! Makes me reminisce about our air travel with two kids...yikes! We have those traveling DVD players. One for each. Keeps em busy. Now, if they could just learn that they don't have to talk so loud when they have the earphones on...

  9. You're never going to be able to get away with anything with your son!

He's definitely going to keep you on your toes, but at least you know, he won't be breaking any laws.

  10. I love it and I believe that lil 2 year old deserves a extra happy for "calling them to the carpet".. and excuse me Stupid Lady sticking your tongue out at a kid...OMG! I also agree with COVER your mouths people so rude and I tell them so all the time. I will actually get out of line if there is a rude hacker around and rant the entire time about them and lack of manners. I love your child by the way. YOU have done an excellent job Mom!

  11. I used to fly quite a bit with my girls when they were litte (they are 17 and 14 now) and boy do I wish they had iPods then. That would have made the whole experience SO much easier. You're little guy sounds very entertaining!

  12. I'd like to know how you trained your two-yr-old. What techniques did you use? With a one-yr-old ready to be trained i must know!

  13. You son sounds like he was very entertaining on your flight. I love talking to children when we travel. I swear they can spot a "Nana" from miles away. Passengers that don't know the rules or read the signs, and parents that don't bring entertainment for the kids on long flights, drive me crazy.

I think he had a good flight keeping all the adults in line.

  14. "I love it when a 2 year old calls you on the carpet" - obviously you have now discovered that it is hilarious until it is you that gets busted.

He is astute and adorable as are you.

    Welcome back to the ATL.

  15. You can always tell a good parent by the child. Sounds like you've got one smart / polite / well behaved little one! Congrats~!

  16. lol I can't wait till my little nephew (15mos) starts speaking in sentances. He's going to be a little smart @ss. At least he will if I have anything to do with it!

    Great post!

  17. Hilarious! Reminds me way too much of my 5 y/o, he entertains us and keeps us on our toes!

    ReplyDelete
  18. So funny! He is so smart! I laughed about the coughing woman because that absolutely drives me crazy when people do that (if she's sick, she shouldn't even be traveling on the plane in my opinion)! Hope you have a great week!

  19. I think many airports could use your little guy at the security area. No doubt people would take their shoes off with him there.

My 2-year-old is a Springsteen fan and that makes me very happy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL! Smart boy... a little TOO smart...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Awesome! I love that he called out the shoe rebels...seriously, like the TSA doesn't shove those rules at you like every .5 seconds. You have to be a moron not to know! ;) Good for him!

    ReplyDelete
  22. They really know how to get you at that age don't they. Too funny xoxo

  23. Smart little man. He knows what's going on & has a good taste in music.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love it when kids call adults on the carpet! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, this is hilarious! I love the brutal honesty of toddlers!

    ReplyDelete
  26. At least he applies the rules consistently and doesn't play favorites!

    Good boy!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love it when my niece, in her little bitty body, opens her LARGE mouth an calls people out...it is priceless!

    ReplyDelete
  28. My son will do the same thing. However, he seems to think from time to time that some of the rules he is reinforcing with his younger sis don't necessarily apply to him as well. That's when Mama has to walk by with her pin and pop that little bubble of delusion.

  29. If I should ever have a child (well, I probably will), I can only hope to have one as clever and witty as yours.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hopefully, your son will grow out of it...

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ha!! What a gem! Apparently, you have taught him quite well. Now teach him what narc means ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am terrified to fly by myself. I don't know if I could do it with a 2 year-old!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's a shame and good all at the same time that the blatant honesty gets turned into something far less as a child grows older.

I guess the flight attendants thought they didn't have to fly by the rules...

    ReplyDelete
  34. hats off to your son for being AWESOME. but i'm totally disappointed in you standing up. don't all mothers have snacks right in their hand at all times? lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. My son was always known as the "hall monitor". It wasn't tell 5th grade when the kids taught him to keep his "monitoring to himself" and he realized that he needed to worry more about himself than others.

At age 4 though, it is always helpful to have a monitor to say things for you that you wouldn't dare say aloud

  36. Out of the mouths of babes - no truer words have ever been spoken!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Traveling with kids is always fun. Why did we teach themhow to speak anyway?!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now that's adorable. I will be flying for the first time with kids next summer...can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Clearly you should teach classes on how to raise children because that boy of yours is a little Einstein, but just adorable and without the freaky hair :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. The great lessons we learn from the mouths of babes!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Your son sounds too cute for words! I would have loved taking a flight with him!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh my gosh, your son is CLASSIC!! I love that he calls it like he sees it...hysterical!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am sure someone already commented like Mother like Son, but I didn't read all of the above comments so....like Mother, like Son. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. What cutie wise little man. One of my kids is very much like that,; my husband calls her pedantic. Hahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Dude, lessons you teach your kids always come back to haunt you. Always. Such smart-asses. But who'd want a dumb one?

    ReplyDelete
  46. hahaha ohhh dear your blog is hilarious. i have a feeling i'd be one of the people your son was scolding at the airport/on the plane. i just can't ever seem to get it together while traveling! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha! This really made me smile!

  49. lol. ur son is one cutie. I wouldve probably laughed every single time, until he called ME out.

  50. Very cute. I wish my little boy grooved to such an impressive music library!

  51. Let's see, a future having to do with the law and its enforcement in some regard.....

    ReplyDelete
  52. Funny funny four year old. And he really listens to that music. YAY for him and you!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Why is it that the children tend to behave better than the adults ?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well done and bravo for his musical training. Kidz Bop/Disney sings Madonna is not an option.

And yes, I love that he was 4 for 0

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love that kid! He's a rule-follower, which shows that his parents are responsible and are doing their jobs. Also shows that he's a good listener! And apparently he has better manners than most adults.

    Good work, mom and dad!

    ReplyDelete
  56. hahahahaha your son is AMAZING. He's going to break a lot of hearts someday!! (But at least he'll always be polite and safe.)

    ReplyDelete
  57. your kid's a sharp one. good for him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My boys love to fly too!!

You had a marvelous adventure. Too bad you didn't hit a nice air pocket to shake up a few folks that didn't fasten their seat belt.

    ReplyDelete
  59. At least he didn't say that you needed to sit on your ass. Ah ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  60. THAT is classic! That is so something my oldest would do. Although I especially like it when I point at him and say NO BITING and he points right back at me and says YEAH NO BITING! That's just great!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Precious little guy you have there!! Thanks for the love you left on my blog via Mary's. She is fabulous!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Doesn't it just kill you when they do that. My 5 yr old is notorious for asking questions about people when we are out. Makes you want to crawl into your purse and hide, thankfully I carry a really big purse :).

I'm so glad you got one nice person on the flight, I never have that luck :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. lol....it's funny when it's someone elses kids...when it's mine...not so much!!! i love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. You've got a very clever little one there. Wise words indeed. I would like to know how the crew reacted. I bet you there were some forced smiles through clenched teeth.

    Lovely tale.

    Greetings from London.

    ReplyDelete
  65. At least he said bottom. My kid probably would have said ass.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think that's so cool you're teaching him about modern music. My mom and big sis did the same for me too.

Seriously, your little man sounds adorable. Have a great weekend!

  67. Flight with entertainment music having a travel was nice and really entertaining specially music of U2, Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, and Coldplay. Apple ipod was really great. Let's Rock.
