In my post Monday, I shared my celebration of a wonderful woman and friend who has been a long term role model for me. She is also a breast cancer survivor. I shared her story with you, and thank you so much for the amazing comments you shared. I have printed all of these and will send them to her. The cameraderie that is shared in Blog World is a powerful force and Monday was a perfect example. I also wrote that post to share my thoughts about her with her because I am a true believer that people you love should never wonder about your feelings towards them.
And I want to share something else. When I spoke to MA earlier this week, she thanked me for the birthday gift I mailed. And I told her that in her honor, I also gave a gift to someone else.
Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces for children suffering from hair loss from any long-term illness. When I went in for the cut, the salon began to buzz with a few women sharing stories of doing this similar act. And one person said to me, "You know, there is a little girl who goes to class and never smiles because she doesn't look like all of the other kids. And because of you, she will have the most beautiful hair in school."
I am not special. I am not finding a cure or eliminating a single family from being told their child is sick. But I do think we can all play a small part in making life better for others. And leaving the salon with a gift in honor of an inspiring woman did add a little lift to my step. It could be that by removing 11 inches of hair, I certainly weighed less. Or it could be that my heart felt a bit more buoyant that day. And a buoyant heart is always welcome.
I am off tomorrow for a day with MiniMac. And if you are celebrating, have a beautiful Easter. I know we will and I am grateful and thankful for so many things in my life. Have a fantastic weekend.
I used to cut hair at a salon in Buckhead and I was the "locks of love" stylist. I probably did over 50 haircuts where the hair was donated.

Cancer is a horrible disease. It can rob you of your health, your future, your loved ones, your sense of invincibility, your dignity.

ReplyDeleteJust caught up with your Monday post too...so glad that someone so special is a survivor. Cancer has destroyed the lives of so many people we love (my dad is currently living with cancer and fighting it all the way!)and it is heartening to read a positive story.

ReplyDeleteMy daughters have done this several times, and it's always such a neat thing. I wish there were a way to convey that this really is how lives are changed - by small, manageable acts performed by busy, everyday people. No one has to do everything. Everyone doing something would be plenty.

ReplyDeleteI support the Shavathan every year that raises money for CANSA. Its a brilliant cause. I've never been brave enough to cut off all my locks but I do spray my hair, donate and volunteer at local shopping centres to raise funds.
I did Locks of Love a few years ago, and my hair's getting long enough to do it again this summer.

ReplyDeleteI donated 12 inches to Locks of Love almost exactly three years ago! It wasn't a big deal for me; I was cutting my hair anyway, but I know it was a huge deal for someone who could have hair again. My hairdresser actually cried when she cut it! LOL... I'd love to do it again, but I have such a hard time now letting my hair grow. It is such a great feeling though.

ReplyDeleteNot too long ago there was a function at night at our elem school and a popular teacher had sold the rights to another teacher to cut off her long hair at this event for Locks of Love. Another teacher paid $25 to do this (went to cancer research) and we all cheered when it was done. Then two 12 yr old girls had their moms cut their hair on stage for Locks of Love too. I must say all three of them looked great with their resulting shoulder-length hair—and so do you! Such a wonderful organization.

Ah, yes. Locks of Love is a wonderful organization. Keelan has donated to it either two or three times. And I believe Kessa has once. I, myself, can't stand to get my hair long enough for them to even raise an eyebrow at. Over 40. No more long locks for me.

I just think it's one of the neatest organizations out there. Such a simple thing really, but it can make such a difference in a patient's outlook. ReplyDeleteI did Locks of Love a few years ago. Chopped off 16 inches of my hair, and I grew it out for about 2 years. SUCH a rewarding experience.
Beautiful!!! You and your hair. ;) Olivia donated her hair a couple of years ago and we've been growing it out ever since so we can do it again!

Wow, what a lovely and simple and astounding thing to do. You've no doubt made someone very happy and given her or his family a great deal of hope and healing. Although this is nothing like losing a full head of hair, when I was a child I lost my hair during surgery in a few places and it never grew back. I was sure that everyone in my class could see a big bald spot on the back of my head. To this day, I still worry about stylists accidentally cutting my hair too short and exposing the spots. I can only imagine how scary it would feel for a child to lose all of their hair - when all we want to do is fit in.

ReplyDeleteI agree and it's a beautiful thing to do. My girls, when they were little, did this. It was very cute. They got a certificate and everything after their hair was received. It made an impact even as they were still young, they understood.
ReplyDeleteI used to think Locks of Love was a good organization, but my friend used to donate to them and said she stopped.
ReplyDeleteShe said that they do what, unfortunately, a lot of places do: they overcharge the patients who need/want their services...
It's a shame. A person is already buried in bills (more than likely) and just wants hair, and it costs them an arm and a leg like everything else...
I don't know that that would stop me from ever donating, because they are the most well-known and their intentions are good.... But it does bother me...

ReplyDeleteI've donated 4 ponytails to Locks of Love, but am unable to do so anymore because my hair is going grey. So if any of your older readers are interested (I don't see much in the way of grey hair on your friends list, but thought I'd throw that out there, just in case...), the last time I donated my hair, it went to Pantene Beautiful Length, which takes grey hair.
