Roller coaster of love...

Do you remember when Red Hot Chili Peppers did a remake of the classic rock song Love Rollercoaster? I love that song. Back in day, every time we were out and that song came on, it was showtime. Which is a little bit ironic because when I think of roller coasters, multiple words come to mind and LOVE does not even make the list.

Oh, I used to like roller coasters. I used to like them a lot. Excitement dipped in trepidation as you went up, up, up and then hands in the air for the rocket ride through one loop after another.

Roller coasters date back to the 16th century in Russia. The first US roller coaster was actually a switchback railway in Pennsylvania. And the first pure entertainment roller coaster was built on Coney Island in 1884. This spot is where The Cyclone on Coney Island still stands. For hundreds of years, people have sought out the danger and euphoria of great heights and fast speeds.

And it all used to be so exhilarating. And one day I crossed an invisible divide. When did this happen? Perhaps it was in Vegas when my thrill seeker friends and I opted to ride the coaster on top of New York, New York. Shall I blame it on the barrel rolls I was not prepared for? Or I could blame it on the hangover, the cocktails, or lack of enough cocktails but I spent that entire ride going 67 miles per hour and screaming.

When the ride finished, my friend JVC laughed at me like I was an 8 year old girl. A father and son exited the car directly in front of us and the young son turned to me and shared, “You said a bad word on the ride!” A bad word? Consider yourself and your ears lucky kid. I thought of 100 bad words and perhaps fear kept them in my mouth.

You know how many roller coasters come equipped with Photo Ops now? So you can see your face, fixed with bravery and washed with thrill? When we saw our photos after the ride, JVC looked like a satiated speed demon. I looked very similar to this:

All of this bad experience was completely forgotten when I was invited to go on the Aerosmith Rock 'N Roller Coaster at Disney. After the ride when I struggled to appear intact and quickly checked to make sure none of my organs had flown out of my mouth, my friend Brazil asked me if I liked it. Brazil LOVES roller coasters. Trying to be positive, I said I really liked the music. He said he had a harder time hearing the music because I was screaming _______, @!&*%$  and ______ the entire time.

And when I met JohnnyMac, I discovered no bigger roller coaster aficionado exists. But when he invited me to ride Everest with him, I declined. Give Rock 'N Roller coaster another spin? No, thank you. Kraken? I’ll pass. Manta? Are you kidding me?

And when I finally did go on a coaster, it was the Goofy Barnstormer roller coaster in Mickey’s Toon Town Fair. MiniMac's idea. Who was nervous that MiniMac would hate it and cry? Me. Who got off that ride with face flushed with adventure? MiniMac. And a plea “ Can we please go AGAIN?” Apparently, 25 mph and a little 20 foot drop is nothing for my toddler. For him and Daddy, it is a roller coaster of love.

  3. I hate roller coasters and I hate the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I used to make my ex hate them too and when we split up she came round to pick some stuff up and had them on her iPod. That hurt more than her cheating. True story.

  4. Maybe if you tag along with MiniMac on smaller roller coasters like the Goofy Barnstormer you'll regain your love for the big coasters. I'll be trying that with Princess Nagger, too. ;) I lost that loving feeling for roller coasters on the exact same one as you did - the New York, New York in Vegas. Too funny!

  5. I'm terrifed of roller coasters....the worst one for me ever was 'The Mummy' at Universal Studios (LA). I screamed myself hoarse.

Keep swearing I'll never go on one again and then the stupid side of my brain takes over and I convince myself it will be fun :-)

  8. Ok see I LOATHE those things.. I do not even step foot near one let alone on one.. Not even the water flumey things nope Angel don't do sudden drops and heights,

  9. I can take some of the coasters, but no my limits. Fortunately, it has been enough to keep pace with the oldest kid. The Mrs. is no help in this department--she dislikes elevators.

  10. I used to LOVE them! But the older I get, the more I hate them. Last summer we took the tot to SeaWorld and they have a little kiddie coaster. My tot thought it looked fun and when he walked up to the height requirement girl, she was all "eh...close enough". Let me just say he was not even 2 1/2 and he was as tall as most 4 year olds. There were no upside down loops, but the thing was pretty fast. My husband took him. You should see the picture of the tot walking away from that thing...like he was too cool to even be excited about it but "yeah, I did it".

  11. I'm with you, rollercoasters are not my cup of tea. Now the TEACUPS...nope not my thing either, too much spinning for my tummy.

How about eating corn dogs and fresh doughnuts at the food vans? Now THAT is my thing.

    Thanks for dropping by today.

  13. I used to adore roller coasters .Nothing bad ever happened but its been about 8 years since I've been on one and the utter thought of it terrifies me now. I don't think I'll ever get on one again, but you know what? I'm ok with that! I'll stand on the sidelines with ya!

  14. Goofy Barnstormer is my kind of roller coaster! Space Mountain? Not so much! My daughter loved the Goofy one too...we rode it about 4 times in a row!

  15. I take it that you don't enjoy Six Flag over Ga coasters then? The hubby and I are addicted to The Batman ride.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I recently heard that Six Flags in Texas is revamping their Texas Giant to be the worlds biggest drop. It always looks so ramshackle with its crosswork of wooden braces.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Goofy's rollercoaster is a cake walk. I can do that. I gave up the big ones years ago.
I realized: I have much to live for. :0

    ReplyDelete
  18. I, too, have crossed just such an invisible line. I used to claim that the double looped coaster at Six Flags Over Texas was my favorite, named The Shock Wave back in my day. I could keep my arms held high throughout the entire ride. I went back in my twenties and noticed I had lost the enjoyment... my arms fell back to my lap during the loops and my head ached when I walked down the ramp after it was over. That same day I was also talked into riding The Titan, one of the tallest and fastest metal coasters. The G-Force sent my head reeling again and I needed Advil after exiting that ramp. So, the lesson for me... kiddie rides are the extent of my coaster riding these days. I'll just have to take the teasing and name calling that my son and husband throw at me. I'll just sit and have a funnel cake and lemonade while they twist and turn. Ahhhh... that sounds so much more thrilling!

  20. I can take or leave rollercoasters...although the one in Vegas looks way too scary and I would not go on that one.

The thing I noticed the most here is that you said remake instead of cover! Yes! So, yeah, I really strayed from your point. :)

  21. I live up in Cleveland just an hour away from what's been voted as the best amusement park for the last 8 years. We have season passes. We go about 12 times or more a year. (it's open from May to October being in the snow belt)

Boo loves spinny rides and roller coasters like I do. It's great having a partner in crime. And when we get there? It's like we are BOTH 11.

  22. Somewhere in my 20's I stopped enjoying roller coasters. All that jerking around and thrashing is not my idea of a good time anymore. I rather like my feet planted firmly on the ground with a cold beer in hand now. It was fun in my younger days and I'll probably try the smaller rides as Viv gets older.... but for now.... going down the slide at the local playground is enough thrill ride for me! :-)

  24. I'm not afraid of heights as my job has me hanging on the side of piping and scaffolding 100 feet in the air but I've never enjoyed having my stomach sitting in the back of my throat. Plus I didnt want to lose the lunch I just paid theme park prices for. But standing by the photo display watching the faces.... Priceless.

  26. I am so with you on this. I used to LOVE rollercoasters and went to Great America all the time. This past year for my birthday I went with a bunch of friends for Fright Fest to do something different. I just wanted to ride a few rollercoasters and eat some funnel cake. Going out and drinking until 5 a.m. the night before made that a bit complicated. And the biggest thing I could handle that day was a little spinny ride that made me want to die. I rode the slow-moving carousel a few times though. Love your story!

  27. I grew up at Cedar Point...Americas Roller Coast...haha

  28. I LOVE roller coasters. Haven't been on one in a long time though. Not since the kids quit going to the amusement park with their summer passes.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I still love roller coasters (prolly 'cause I was 16 before I was tall enough to get to go on one), but can't ride them multiple times. Rockin' Rollercoaster is the exception - I can spend the whole day at Disney going back and forth between the Tower of Terror and the Rockin' Rollercoaster. I actually have, on many occasions :)

Can't take the wooden ones anymore, though. The jostling does my neck in and I leave with a headache like you wouldn't believe.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't do big rides at all. Too afraid. I can go on a few but the big roller coasters--no way. I'm happy to watch. LOL.

  34. This picture is priceless.... I have always been scared of rollercoasters. I have been on a very few. I always liked the rides that went around and round, not up and down...but as I got older I realized that something had changed. I took my daughter Kathryn to a birthday party at American Adventures, you know on Hwy 41 in Marietta? We were on that ride that is called Tilt a Whirl I think- it has the little cups that spin you around? Well we started spinning them really fast and oh we were having so much fun, and then all of a sudden it wasn't so much fun, I looked at Kathryn, and the smile had diminished and I think both of us were about to turn green...and do more than that! I thought it would never ever end. Luckily it did and we managed to make it though! So that was the end of my wild ride!!! We still laugh about it NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Roller coasters don't scare me at all, but I hate them regardless because they cause me to get the WORST headaches. They don't do anything for me except bring me physical pain.

  38. I LOVE the Aerosmith rollercoaster. It is my absolute favorite. Hubby and I do all the coasters...although EVERY SINGLE TIME I ride one, on the way up the first "hill", I realize I have changed my mind and do not really want to do this and really truly want to get off. But...then it's over and I love it and i get back on. HOWEVER...of late, I am getting incredibly nauseous afterwards, and so I am worried that old age has made me soft. Oh, yeah, and the Goofy rollercoaster? Hubby and I nearly gave away our son b/c he was too scared to ride it and we just could not relate! =)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't do amusement park rides, especially rollercoasters. I was forced on one by some "friends" in my teen years. To this day I am amazed that the amusement park didn't see me struggling and intervene. The damn thing got stuck near the top of the highest peak. I seriously thought I was going to die. It was all incredibly traumatic, and I never talked to many of those "friends" ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  40. OFF Topic: Remember in the original version of the song, the blood curdling scream in the background at one point? The rumor was a girl was getting killed in the studio next to where the band was recording. OH we used to just wait for that portion of the song!!! Good high school memories!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I absolutely love roller coasters, but it has been awhile. We don't have any over here...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I completely agree. Back in the day I used to ride everything (of course everything did not equal what exists today at the amusement parks).
At 6 Flags here in town I can handle the Wiley E. Coyote ride but that is it.
Just last night a special was on TV about extreme rides. My family yelled, “MOM YOU GOTTA WATCH THIS!” so I watched in TV and then seriously—I was sick to my stomach just from watching.
Look at the photos of Stratosphere in Vegas and see if you don’t need an Alka Seltzer afterwards.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love roller coasters...but last Fall we went to Cedar Point and I rode 5 major ones within 40 minutes b/c there was no line...and then I puked. That's never happened to me before...I'm getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The same thing happened to me! For years and years my friends and I would make the 2 hour drive to Cedar Point in Ohio and ride roller coasters gallor! As we got older we went less and less. Then one day my husband suggested we go embark on the high speed excitement like we used to do in our hayday. BIG Mistake! I definitely did not enjoy it as much as I used to. I think we stayed for about 2 hours and went right back home!

    ReplyDelete
  45. My daughter loves those damn things. I do not ride anything that leaves the ground much less drop kicks you down a distance that appears to be the equivalent jumping off into the Grand Canyon. Uh huh...no way...no how...you need to back away from the pipe if you think I would even consider it. Seriously. Can you tell I H.A.T.E these things?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Haha, I used to like Roller Coasters too & now it just makes me dizzy - like those that turn you totally upside down. I can't take it anymore haha, I really do prefer the slower ones haha.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I used to absolutely love them, but I've crossed over into the realm you're referring to, and I'm not sure when it happened.

I posted the car-camera video of Grant's first roller coaster ride with Hubs:
    http://viv-spot.blogspot.com/2009/08/grants-first-roller-coaster-ride.html
I was rolling on the floor laughing.

(Momma wouldn't have let him get on this ride.)

(And alcohol, heights and great speed are NEVER a good idea.)

  51. I used to loooooooove roller coasters. Would ride them all the time. As often as I could get on one, I did. In my heart I still love them, but sadly, our love has turned sour and they do not love me in return. The Disney one's don't bother me so much (okay, Everest was a bit traumatizing, but I rode it 4 times, so..you know), but Six Flags can make me look like I've been on a 3 night drinking binge. Not cool.
When Indy was 4 we rode the Barnstormer about 854,639 times. He loved that coaster. Now he's a fan of Thunder Mountain (I do like that one) and Space Mountain, but won't go on anything that has a loop. The Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom coaster in Disneyland Paris has a loop, which makes him sad because hello, Indiana Jones. Space Mountain in DLP has a look too, so he won't go on that either. I'm sure it won't be long though before he's begging me to go on them and I'll be taking Dramamine to get me through them. Sigh.

  52. I used to love roller coasters, too - the scarier the better. But I've not been on one in years. As for the song - I remember listening to it as a kid the original, not the remake!

BTW, the appropriate response to the kid who pointed out that you'd said a bad word on the ride was, "You bet your ass I did!"

  53. I've not been on one in a while but I love roller coasters!!

...and I still <3 you even if you don't. :)

I live pretty close to the "Switchback Railway" in Pennslyvania and have walked UP the incline (I was demented but booze-free, so I just don't know why). It was an 18 mile ride -

More on the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway (about 1/2 way down) if you are so inclined

  54. I'm not too crazy about rollercoasters, but then I read Elle's comment and, now, of course, I have valid reason to keep myself and my daughter off them. Trying to figure out how to copy her comment and make it look like a news release.

I think I can safely say that I will never go on one again, even the thought of them makes my stomach churn :)

  63. Used to love, love, love roller coasters. Now I can only do the ones that curly-cue rather than drop from heart-alarming heights. Thankfully, my kids are old enough to go to Cedar Pointe without me and I no longer have to stroll around reading a book while I chaperoning groups of squealing teenagers.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I need to go to America to go on a rollercoaster, you guys know how to do it properly. Alton Towers is good but most definitely not the same.

When I was younger I went on them with gay abandon, now I find that when I'm faced with one, the absolute terror I feel that I'm going to be thrown out of it to my death, is what makes it exciting for me.

But that makes me sound like I have mental problems.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the old fashioned roller coasters...the wooden ones where there is no upside down involved...however, they pull my muscles out of wack these days...ha! Space Mountian is one of my all time faves too, but the Goofy Barnbuster is probably more by speed too, truth be told. I used to always tell my kids they had to scream on all the rides...that is the fun part!! Major kudos to you for getting on the roller coaster in Vegas...there is no amount of alcohol or money that could get me on that one! Happy weekend to you! xxoo :)

  76. Ugh. My love of roller coasters died when suddenly, after gestating almost 14 lb. of twins, there was a lot more room for my innards to shift around in there. Talk about G-forces. When you add bladder control issues into the mix (thank you, children), roller coasters just don't seem to have that much of a draw anymore!

My dad, on the other hand, has quite an affinity for them and has made several road trips all over the country to ride famous ones. He gets off on it. I, however, would rather scratch my eyeballs out. Thrillseeker I am not.

  103. I hate roller coasters! I know...I know, I'm a chicken, but I always think I'm going to hurt my back, or head, or throat, or foot...eh, the list could go on and on.

  104. I have always loved roller coasters and the last time I went I had to clamp my mouth shut for fear of throwing up. What happened to me?

  105. I used to be soo daring and would hop on anything. Now that I am a mom, I have this nervous thing that I will plummit to my death with my children watching below...just not the way I wanted to go, so...I watch all the glasses, hats and get myself a little coke {the pop not the drug} and wait for a safe return!!!

  106. I am a total wimp when it comes to roller coasters. Even the one in toon town I can't take. Any degree of "dipping" in the motion is enough to send my heart out of my mouth. The only one I'll still go is Grizzly River Run at California Adventure.

  108. Vlad went through a roller coaster phase and I, dutiful mother that I am, spent hours trying not to hurl as we were hurled through space! Thank god he outgrew that phase! I don't think I could have taken much more.

  109. Me? One rollercoaster, one time. I was PETRIFIED!

My kids? Totally fearless as youngsters, totally fearless as adults. Go figure.

  110. I think you are too young to notice yet, that as you age those rides you loved will make you a little sick. Even swings make me sick now. So sad. But, I'm like your hubs...I take my 12 year old alone to Great America and we run from roller coaster to rc and see how fast we can ride them all. I just consider it a dietary aid, since i won't want to eat the rest of the day:) Holly

  111. I went on one of the older ones, before they had those padded harnesses, and thought I was going to fall out. I didn't see the "THIS TALL TO RIDE" sign and the ticket taker either didn't care or wasn't paying attention. I left one of my nine lives back there that day. I almost left the contents of my stomach too, but managed to contain it. Never again! - G

  112. I use to love the rollercoaster at the Seattle center but after going on Space Mt. in Paris, my RC days are over. MiniMac inherited his love for speed and turns honestly. Great story Jenny and sorry I've been lagging in my blog reading. We lost my mum in law on Monday. Yet another sad chapter in our lives. I'm seriously ready for some happier moments. All my best to you fellow Snoho xx

  113. I used to live for roller coasters, like LIVE for them when I was younger. Now I'm a huge old 'fraidy cat and the last time I went on one I was certain I was going to pee my pants...not such good times. When did I get so old, what the heck?

  114. I do not find euphoria in speeds and heights. NOPE. No roller coasters for me --ev--ah.
peeing my pants in public in not what I'd call fun

  117. I used to be one of the Roller Coaster Junkies. And then I think I crossed that "invisible divide" as well. Now I'll go to the amusement park, but I usually take a book and a camera. The kids ride the coasters, I read my book and snap some shots. All's right with the world...

  118. Hey, a kid has to learn a little #!$@&!@ somewhere. I always say, better on a rollercoaster than in a church.

  119. I'm a huge Aerosmith fan and a huge roller coaster fan so an Aerosmith roller-coaster?! I'M IN! Anyone wanna come with?

  120. I used to be a fan of roller coasters, but I am no longer a fan since they jerk the hell out of my neck and leave me with a migraine and the feeling of borderline quadraplegic. These days I get my kicks from champagne. :)

  121. Being married to my wife is a roller coaster.

  122. I used to hate roller coasters since the time I was forced to ride one at age 5.

Then, I discovered I loved them as a teenager.

Then I got old enough that they started making things hurt days later, and the hate returned.

Now I don't make the height requirement.

  123. Roller coasters are evil torture machines. Especially for those who are afraid of heights but don't want to seem like a wimp, but end up screaming the entire time.

  124. I love roller coasters, however, The cyclone in coney island is no joke. That sonofabitch is rickety as hell, and there were a few times where I thought a low hanging beam was going to take my head off.

  125. Heh. Well, I thought we were twins separated at birth until now. ;-)
But I can still sympathize with you, can't I... Hummmm Gee, this is harder than I thought! ;-)

  126. I used to like roller coasters, but for some reason the last couple I've gone on were pure torture for me. I think as I've gotten older it just isn't fun anymore.

  127. I love rollercoasters but only when people are watching me bravely throwing my hands in the air... it's no fun if noone sees right?

    ReplyDelete
  128. I LOVE rollar coasters! I am a little more scared now that I am older, but that is the fun part for me :)

Did I tell you I rode the tallest roller coaster in Europe?
