The Edge

Last weekend, MiniMac and I stopped by Barnes and Noble. While in line, MiniMac said, “Mommy, look at the edge.”
I inquired, “The edge of what, baby?”
And when I turned around to see his reference, only then did I notice that he didn’t mean the edge of anything.
He meant THE Edge.

And when we got home, he said, "The Edge plays the guitar like me."

I will say when I was two years old, I knew only albums involving fairy tale readings and the only adult figure I could recognize outside of my family MIGHT have been Captain Kangaroo.

My son is on his way to being so much cooler than me. And my son can thank me in 20 years that he NEVER had to watch Captain Kangaroo.

PS: And even if you have an aversion to kids, be it minor or major, you have to admit, a kid with a guitar is pretty cool. Come on, make a little soft spot in your heart for it. haha.

PSS:  Because you are sitting there reading, and don't really want to get back to work or household chores do you? You are invited to read my interview at the beautiful SocieteAmore.  Thank you Rowe for the feature!

  1. Kids TV today is a million miles past the Kaptain Kangaroo stuff.
He looks good with the guitar!

  2. Any male with a guitar (or female for that matter), young, old, in-between, is cool :)

  3. He's more likely to be grateful for not having to have been subject to Mr. Rodgers. But I wonder what you will feel like when he comes home pierced, tattooed, with an entourage of blonds.

  4. That is so precious! I LOVE it.

  5. This is VERY cool. I'm a musician, I've been working with the same guitar company for the last 10 years, so this just made my day. :) I *love* when kids recognize good music.
There are awards for you on my blog, if you'd like them :)

  6. Very cool indeed! Was it The Edge in person - or a picture? I am guessing the real thing? Doubly cool!

Loved your interview - I could read your stuff all day long so I hope this interview giving is not going to be a regular thing, I only have so much free time LOL!!

Loved your comment about your late uncle being the only one with any laid-back tendencies :)

    Happy Friday JennyMac :)

PS I am reading "The Book Thief" right now, such an amazing read.

    100% cool kid.

  11. Heck yes, that's one cool kid! Who knows, maybe one day he'll get to play alongside The Edge. I love hip kids... I wish I had been one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh! He looks so cute and definitely cool with those sunglasses and his guitar. Who knows? One day, he might even outrank the Edge himself.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Impressive and way cool!

When I was a kid I thought Captain Kangaroo became Walter Conkrite when it was time to do the news. And the only musician I could have identified was Jim Nabors (my mother played his albums NONSTOP through my childhood). Not cool, so not cool.

  19. Yep the Captain had weird bangs that made me never trust him. Now Mr. Green Jeans .....I lurved! And Mr. Rogers rocked in supreme dorkiness except I could've done without King Friday. Romper Room sucked.

That is very cool MiniMac recognized The Edge. He does kinda look like him ....you gotta get him a skull cap.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What a hot kid! That cracks me up that he knows who Edge is. I saw U2in concert years ago.

But EVERY kid should see Captain Kangaroo at least once.

    ReplyDelete

  39. Excellent! Another parent who exposes their children to the essentials! My kids have been listening to U2 since they were babies as well...but I'm pretty sure they would recognize The Edge. A tip of the hat to you, Mr. MiniMac.
I never watched The Captain (before my time I think) but I do remember Boomerang, Mr. Rodgers and Sesame Street. And there was one show that had Bill Cosby with a pen...or am I imagining that one?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm not a big advocate of kids, but he really is cute. Love those shades!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Awww! he's so cute!! I miss all those old shows!! But then I am showing my age!! =0D

    ReplyDelete
  42. He had to have learned it somewhere. Kids don't just know that stuff with out being taught... He's cool like MamaMac!

    ReplyDelete
  43. He's a born rocker which I'm not sure is a good thing for you.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is too cute! It's like my daughter who sings songs from Lady Gaga and Sean Paul, and she's only 2! She will definitely be way cooler than me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He's ONLY 2?!?!?!

    Holy Sh*t!

He's gonna be the next Stevie Ray Vaughn by starting that early.

    ReplyDelete
  47. MiniMac is cooler than I will ever be. And excuse me, how is it that the Edge is at your bookstore? Was he shopping? Playing his guitar? What?

I had an Uncle Gene who was always called Uncle Green Jeans....

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree, a kid with a guitar is a very cool thing to behold. I wholeheartedly encourage an interest in music and instruments with my own kids. We do have a special affection for guitars.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That pic is poster-worthy. He is slammin'.

I agree w/Ed...you should host a giveaway w/an autograph from your rockstar.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just as long as the little man doesn't blow past the SpongeBob SquarePants year(s)....

    ReplyDelete
  51. I know! Kids these days....
My not even 2 year old niece knows who Lady Gaga is and sings "Poker Face" and "Single Ladies." We don't know how she learned them!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh, that is SOOO cute! And I think that it's hilarious that he noticed The Edge! Good spot, kid! Rock on!

    ReplyDelete
  53. He's a cutie! I've noticed kids are a lot smarter today than they used to be, but have no idea why. Is it because we all watched Captain Kangaroo and they didn't?)

    I also enjoyed the interview.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Great picture. Our youngest three years old) loves guitars and pretends to rock all the time. Unfortunately, his fav 6 strings are pink--I'll have to work on that before he goes global.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It is bloody well awesome that he plays guitar. I love the guitar and wish I could play. Hoping that my daughter will take it up.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I might have passed out cold, both from seeing the Edge and my kid's genius. If it had been Larry Mullin I would have for sure passed out.

My son made a Midnight Oil request the other day. I think we are bringing them up just right.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Better get in fast for an autograph now! Your little man is both cool and very sweet; I like his confidence "the Edge plays guitar like me". Thanks for the mention, I'm so glad you were happy to be interviewed.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I like that the Edge plays guitar like MiniMac and not the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  65. love your blog. thanks for stopping by mine. your son is darling and he def does look cool with a guitar. you are a cool mom! snow days are cool to catch up on house stuff. we need one of those here... but not really... hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  66. You bet he's cool! But I still can't believe he knew who The Edge was.

    ReplyDelete
  67. To steal from & butcher a TV show line, your son is so cool he needs a new word for cool. The Edge?!?

Enjoyed your interview, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That is awesome. I mean, how cool is MiniMac?

Do you think he might date older women when he gets to be that age? I would totally love to hook him up with Boo Boo.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  69. ML: considering that I saw him looking at a picture of Scarlett Johansson in my Vogue a few months ago SO often that I started taking pics of it, and then one day saw him kiss her picture, I would say Boo Boo is a much more appropriate age range. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  70. You have THE coolest son, hands down. I LOVE the Edge.

I would be a bad parent though because I would have made my child go over to him and say hi. So that I could pretend like he had wandered off and oh! Look! Its the Edge! Hello there!

Also, I read the interview and it was a good read!

    ReplyDelete
  71. He's a doll and most definitely going to be a heartbreaker! Sorry I've been such a bad bloggy friend! Forgive me!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Um MiniMac is ADORABLE!!! He's going to get all the ladies with that guitar!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I could not imagine being a grown man and having people call me "The Edge"! How dumb is that? lol

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yep, he is one cool dude. How adorable can he even be with those sunglasses and guitar!!!! Rock star material for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hi JennyMac!

Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog today :)

Funny you should mention my email address....I actually added it last night to my blog and I have had a few emails today so I am guessing I did it right. I hadn't realised I hadn't added it before, sorry! Would you try it and see please.

  77. He is super cute. Will he get an electric guitar when he is 3? We have a son who really likes music. His parents (us) are clueless about instruments. But we will be his biggest supporter in most any of his passionate entrepreneurial interests.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Man, I can remember at that age thinking my daddy was Johnny Cash. Now I think he was more like a cross between Elvis and Johnny. Er, well, back then. Because in reality he looks like a withered little troll NOW.

    ReplyDelete
  79. What a cool kid! Very impressive.

    Sharer

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh my gosh that picture is to die for! See, all noise making toys aren't THAT bad.

  82. Your kid is going to be the Casanova of his kindergarten. Look out sister. Those little girls are aggressive.

    ReplyDelete
  83. If only my Boops was a couple of years older we would have the next sunny and cher. She can sing Rock a'Bye Baby like her soul's very life depends on it.

    Rock On MiniMac!!!!

  84. Your Mini-Mac had me at his first guitar string. He is adorable & wayyy cool. Love music & love kids and the two together is pure harmony.
I thoroughly enjoyed your interview with Rowe. Your mom is a wise woman. I completely forgot you lived in Seattle. Did you grow-up there?

Sending you best wishes for a terrific (cold?)weekend. x deb

  85. See, now that's the right way to raise your kids. This is awesome.

  86. ANYONE with a guitar is cool. Especially a kid. Luke used to play bass before his mission. Hoping he'll find his way back to it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Soon it will be time to get him some Jimi Hendrix albums.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Fabulous! MiniMac is beyond cool! I'm in love!

    ReplyDelete
  89. wow...let me tell you, those shades are kinda kick-ass on him. the guitar doesn't hurt.

just keep your eye on him - everyone knows that girls have a soft spot for boys with shades and a guitar.

oh...i just want to 'squeee' at him all night long....

    ReplyDelete
  90. We gave our grandson a guitar when he turned 2, and he has loved it. I posted a mini-movie of him strumming it, and then bowing like a cello. We got a drum set for Christmas; he's not quite 3 and he loves it even more than the guitar. Kids who love music are VERY cool, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Your kiddo is SUPER cool! Who's THE Edge???

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hallelujah, she enabled Name/URL again!

Your son can't help but be cool, given his parentage. Colour us unsurprised ;)

He's adorable though; what a sweetpea!

  97. He's a pretty groovy guy, ain't he? Congrats on the nominations, chica...I'm proud of ya!

    ReplyDelete
  98. The Edge is so hot. I didn't even know who he was until I saw him on the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I know I'm lame. I love when he says "HOLA" in the song, I think it's called invertigo?? I'm not a big U2 fan, however after seeing them on the show, I might jsut become one.

    ReplyDelete
  99. What a cute kid!!! My seven year old made me proud the other day when we were talking about Elvis and how he died from drugs..he piped up and said "just like Keith Moon from the WHO"...I was shocked!

    ReplyDelete
  100. That is amazing that he knew who the Edge was, by gosh he takes his music seriously thats for sure.

He is cute in his shades.

Adorable boy...those wrap-around-sunglasses are killing me. Those are serious BIKER glasses.

And what? No Bob the Builder? No Teletubbies? (UH-OH!)

(Jen: Why are you not on Kindle??? Or, are you?)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Too cute. And I can sympathize with the, ahem, joy of watching your child surpass you in cool before they're even old enough to cross the street by themselves, lol . . .

    ReplyDelete
  104. I have no idea who The Edge is. Obviously, your kid is already cooler than me:)

    ReplyDelete

  109. Cute!

I wanted to play gee-tar from the age of two. My folks ignored it and I waited until 16 to get my own and teach myself. Wasted years, grrrr.

Encourage him as hard as you can

    ReplyDelete
  110. He is so cool...and adorable. And yeah, I had no idea about anything cool at 2 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Your son is already way cooler than me.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Cool dude! I thought we did a great job by banning Barney and listening to They Might Be Giants' album for children. We need to do better! LOL. I enjoyed reading the interview. Didn't know you are working on a book and am not surprised. You are a great writer. I love the book Jane Eyre too.
