Now this is a pumpkin dessert I can sink my teeth into...Why this versus any other dessert at the pumpkin bonanza time of year? Because I confess: I am not down with the pumpkin pie. As a matter of fact, I don't care for any kind of pie. But since I love to bake, love big holiday family/friend get-togethers, and love to try new things, this recipe is a perfect fit. Warm cinnamon, a golden crust, and an airy whipped filling = delicious.
You know with the word butter in the title, it has to be Paula Deen. Buon Appetito!
Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake
Ingredients
Cake:
- 1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix
- 1 egg
- 8 tablespoons butter, melted
Filling:
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 8 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan.
To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter, and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mix well. Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey.

It looks divine! funny b/c I'm not "down with the pumpkin pie thing" either--so I wrote a post for next week of a creamier pie version that we like. Have a great weekend and holiday!

This sounds delicious! I AM down with the pumpkin pie, but this would be a nice addition to dinner. And if it's Paula, it can't be wrong! (whenever DH sees me get the butter out of the fridge when I'm cooking, he starts calling me Paula lol). Thanks for the recipe. Kathy
Hi Sheila: Definitely fridge and then let it get to room temp before serving. :)
Paula Deen = butter. And the yum.
This thing is screaming for a spicy bourbon whipped cream...
Hi, Thanks for sharing, I love anything Pumpkin including pie but it's always nice to have something new to try!
The recipe looks devine, and how unAmerican not to like pumpkin pie.

Oh, that sounds lovely!
I bet it's not as good as sex.
That'll be much better than a pumpkin pie, thank you.

Is it wrong to want this first thing in the morning? Hmmmm...
I hate baking and wish you were here today to bake for me. I volunteered for a local park bake sale.
Nice in concept. Give back to the community, but I HATE BAKING. I just tried making these honey mustard/parmesan pecans and they SUCK.
I'm soooooo screwed. Now I have to go to the grocery story and buy stuff to bake.
Okay, done venting.

Wow, are you sure there's enough butter in that recipe?
This sounds delicious. I am so glad you did not include the nutrition facts (calories) that always ruins a good dessert!!
so I have to know...how do you stay so thin and make these yummies ever single week?
OK, I am making this this week. We are going out to eat, but I need some pumpkin around the house.
MMM! I love me anything pumpkin...especially pumpkin pie...there's no replacing it! However, this may have to star in a supporting role!!!
Doesn't all the powdered sugar make your teeth ring?
Or does the cream cheese take some of the sweetness out of it?
I happen to love pumpkin pie so I'm just asking....
is it seriously called "gooey" or did you add that ;-) looks yummy. You've about gotten me inspired enough to get reacquainted with my baking pans...
Oooh! I'll have to try this. My roomate doesn't like pumpkin pie either....mayeb this'll convince her pumpkin can be good. Thanks for sharing!
I emailed this post to my dear mither. Is it cheating to prompt her with the things I want to eat for Thanksgiving? I guess I COULD make it myself, but then I'd have to clean up the kitchen.
Oh yum, I am going to have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing!
Mmmmmmmmmmmm! I'm makin' it!

Yummy! I love pumpkin anything. I will have to try this. I did make something similar to this from Paula Deen, maybe the same recipe, a long time ago. The only thing I would change would be the amount of powdered sugar. Came out a little too sweet for me but overall it was amazing. Thanks for reminding me of this.
Oh my greatness- It looks so scrummy.
