Oh Deer! The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Good: Because never before have I laughed at a deer cartoon. Until now.

The Bad: Who you callin' Bambi, son?

WINTERSVILLE, Ohio — A 7-year-old Ohio boy playing a game of backyard football was tackled by a deer.

Brandon Hiles says he encountered the buck when the ball rolled into woods while he was playing with friends Saturday in Wintersville, about 125 miles east of Columbus. The boy says the buck ran at him and flipped him with its horns, leaving bruises and a gash. His 9-year-old friend Wyatt Pugh beat the deer with a stick to make it go away.

Wintersville Police Officer Art Fowler Jr. says there were actually two bucks in the area gearing for a fight, and Brandon was attacked when he inadvertently got between them.

Serious "Touch Football" I'd say. Nothing like a large buck getting in on the game. And worth mentioning is not only the fact this buck tackles better than some NFL players, but I love that Wyatt Pugh went to task with a stick to save his friend. Talk about a 9 year old with a brave heart and quick reflexes. Now, that is moxie after a mother's heart.

The Ugly: Because apparently, there is a shortage of things to do in Sioux City.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Animal control officers in Sioux City, Iowa, say someone dressed a dead deer in a clown suit and wig and put it on a family's porch. Officers suspect it was a prank, considering Halloween is approaching, but they say it's not funny, safe or acceptable. The deer was discovered Wednesday morning.

Animal Control Officer Jake Appel says leaving a dead animal is immature and illegal. He says officers will dispose of the deer properly. Sioux City police have not opened an investigation.

I would love to know how someone mustered the tenacity to handle this dead animal long enough to put it in a clown suit when I struggled for 10 minutes to simply remove a dead mouse from my garage.

  1. That was a mixed bag of funny, inspirational and WTF!

  2. What do you suppose the bear in the cartoon would have thought about a deer in a clown suit?

  3. Bwaahahahaha! Hilarious!

The bad and the ugly? You do see life in all its glory in your neck of the woods, don't you? :)

  4. That little boy was lucky. He could have been killed.

Unfortunately I know far too much about deer and he was probably in the buck's path to a doe.

I do love the cartoon. Very cute.

  5. Where do you find this stuff?? Loved the good, the bad and the ugly is very upsetting!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Umm... I think I just threw up a little reading that last one. Seriously? Dead deer in a clown suit? Where do people come up with this stuff?!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah, but you know how priceless it was to see the look on those people's faces when they saw that dead deer in a clown suit.

  8. I wish we had a photo of the deer in the clown suit

  9. Oh dear. I would be horrified to meet the person who finds humor in dressing a real dead dear in a clown suit and leaving it to decompose on their porch. WTH???

  10. love the cartoon! dead dear in a clown suit? gross!

  11. Clowns are freakin' scary. Even deer clowns.

  12. That's taking things a little to the extreme. Kind of funny though with the deer and all.
My B-I-L got slammed by a moose once. He wasn't very happy. It took his watch. Seriously!

  13. I've never thought about dressing up a dead deer in a clown suit and leaving it on someone's porch.

Suddenly I have plans for the weekend.

  14. Ok, I have a confession. When I was about 8 years old I picked up a squished frog from the middle of the street, put it on a piece of 2 x 4 in my friend's garage, and left it on the door step of a little girl that I couldn't stand. I even wrote a note that said, "This is your uncle."

It was mean, gross and a hateful thing to do. (Not quite sure what possessed me to do such a thing...) I was found out and mildly disciplined. But, I'm sure that family thinks I ended up in jail or convicted of some heinous crime against animals or humanity.

Ok, I know that's no deer in a clown costume story, but just thought I would share...

  15. That is a cute cartoon!

I hear you on the dead mouse thing. We tend to get them here when the weather starts to get colder and I just poke at the trap with a stick and then put on the heaviest gloves I can find to pick up the trap and put it outside for my husband to deal with when he gets home from work. Then those gloves go in the trash and I go in the shower!

  16. The good and the bad were funny. The ugly would have been better if the deer was alive and tied to their porch dressed like a clown. Then I would applaud the effort. Of course, it wouldn't qualify as ugly anymore, but still.

  17. That is a funny cartoon. The kid, man that sucks. Horrible luck. While, that last story freaks me out on SO many levels. I'm afraid of clowns. Dead deers, whatever. But clowns NO WAY.

  18. What a funny post. We have a ton of deer around our house, living on several acres. It's night waking up on a snowy morning and looking up during breakfast from our kitchen table to see 6 -8 deer roaming through our yard. That is until they start attacking my trees, then I am out there with my own stick!

  19. this was great in every single way. thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Soooo funny. Well, the dead dear, that is not so funny. Poor guy, maybe the 'attacking' dear was his friend and he was acting out as a result of this clown trauma.

  21. agree with earlier comment - clowns are not funny. They are sinister. SO not a laughing matter. But the cartoon is hilarious. - Diane

  22. Three things:

    1) Wyatt Pugh is a kick-ass name that belongs in my as-yet-unthought-of novel.

    2) I LOVE how the animal control officer pronounced it "immature" ...he sounds more like a therapist. Except then he adds " ...and illigal" in case we all think he sounds like a therapist.

    3) I know of a deer cartoon that made me laugh laugh so much I have never forgotten it--I'm gonna try to find it and send it to you!

  23. Oh deer! I grew up in Sioux City and I think that may have been my brother...
You have to understand someone's sense of humor... To someone like him, that's HYSTERICAL!

  24. A deer in a clown suit....I don't even know where to start with that one!!

And that cartoon is hilarious, I love it!

    Happy Week-end!

  25. Oh deer!
When I was 8 we took a road trip from our hometown (New Orleans) up to Wisconsin to visit my mom's family. We got as far as Jackson, Mississippi. A deer sprinted across I-55 and we hit it with our Toyota minivan. It was a scary, sad day. Blood all over the car, and the deer was flung to the side of the road. Needless to say we never made it to Wisconsin.

And here in Kansas I often see dead deer on the side of the highway. It's sad and I feel badly that we are encroaching on their territory. Civilization is spreading and soon there won't be any sacred space left for wildlife. Sheesh.

  26. What an awesome friend to go after the deer with a stick! Everyone needs a friend like that...just in case:)

    ReplyDelete
  27. That was a great way to start my morning, thank you

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, we just saw an insane number of dead deer along the interstate on our recent trip to Pittsburgh. I think the budget for removal of dead animals must have suffered huge cuts. But there was not one in a clown suit. Nor was I tempted to stop and dress one up as a prank!

Love that 9-year old, though! Good thinking!

  29. Oh deer! Hilarious and strange and just plain disturbing... clowns and dead animals... someone has a strange imagination...

    ReplyDelete
  30. The only thing that could've made that deer story more awesome is if the deer did a dance in the end zone!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I rescued a drowning rat out of my pool because I couldn't bear to see it suffer. I don't know how anyone could put a clown suit on a dead deer? First story - crazy & sweet, second one - makes one think and not want to move to Sioux Falls!

You are so good at connecting these stories!! Happy weeknd to you Jenny x

  32. The cartoon...too funny.

The little boys I bet will be friends forever. What a brave boy.

The dead deer...just wrong on so many levels.

  33. A friend of mine had two deer crash through her sliding glass doors when they were on vacation. They came home to a house that looked like a crime scene. There were two dead deer in the house and the entire first floor had to be gutted.

  34. Hilarious!!!!

    Have a super weekend!

  35. Dressing up a dead deer is easy. You just pretend it is a skinny dead cow with horns, and proceed normally.

    ReplyDelete
  36. OMG...you know those people who dressed the deer probably run back to their mobile home with their mullets waving in the wind!

    ReplyDelete
  37. The cartoon is great. "I want you inside me" lol....

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  38. I can sort of understand the dead deer in a clown suit--you could never talk a live one into donning one of those!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I must be deranged because I found everyone of the stories amusing...the cartoon however was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Good- Suggestively funny
    Bad- Awesome story
    Ugly- WTF? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am thinking that once your clown suit story reaches our rural part of the US that there will be a run at the costume store to replicate this stunt.

    ReplyDelete
  42. hahaaa! that comic is awesome!! and yeah...deer in a clown suit? not so much...that's just creepy...

    ReplyDelete
  43. *snort* at the good.
frowned at the football game, bad.
As far as the ugly... Obviously these people have never dressed a 4year old for halloween, the snow, or a recital: THIS ISN'T FUN!!

  44. We had a dead mouse in our basement and I practically put on house on the market to move the next day so that I would not have to remove it. I thought that was a good solution. You are a BRAVE BRAVE woman for tackling the garage mouse.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Only in the south. haha I think it was more good than bad or ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hahahaha! But deer in a clown suit...not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like how the officer said it was not only illegal, but immature.
I bet he took a picture on his cell and sent it out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha! I think we can all agree the most damming thing is officer Jake Appel pronouncing it illegal AND IMMATURE. That man is just spot on, idn't he? ;-)

  49. That cartoon was so cute.

We have deer in and around where we live. They peak out once and while.

  53. I blame Organized Gambling for the deer attack on the boys playing football. Why? Because someone obviously had a couple of bucks on the game.

Regarding the dead deer in the clown suit, why couldn't it have just been a dead clown?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Don't mess with the wild animals, huh?

Did you hear about the awful story of the Canadian folk singer attacked by coyotes who died? I thought it was a joke when someone was trying to tell me about it, so I asked, 'Did she have an Acme(tm) anvil dropped on her?' Now I feel bad about it...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would have called animal control (or at least my husband) about the mouse...

cartoon - LMAO! That is great!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I wonder what those people did to deserve a dead clown deer on their porch! Still, easier to clean up than a flaming bag of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Why are all the fun things in life immature AND illegal?

  58. I know deer, espcially in rutting season, can be dangerous, but I love when one makes an appearance in my yard.

And, now that I think aboutit, humans can be dangerous when they are in rutting mode. :)

  61. How is it possible that each of these little vignettes is funnier than the last? Talk about "Touch Football" indeed! Hilarious stuff, as always. Good job and thanks for posting.
