Homeward bound

We leave tonight for one of my favorite cities: Seattle. And one of my favorite places on earth: home. Where I grew up and where my entire family and many friends still reside. I can't wait to see them, although, once you have a baby, and he is the first grandson on both sides of the family, you are so second tier.

Here is an example:

Me: Hi. We will be home on Thursday night at 7.

Everyone in Seattle I love either connected to me by DNA or friendship: OH! We can hardly wait to see you and JohnnyMac your little man. (Also known as the Little Prince of Georgia).

Me: And we can't wait to see you.

Everyone: Oh you'll be here? Awesome! I have a little something for you our favorite person in your family. I found a present/new toy/new pjs/new jeans/a baseball glove/an electric guitar/a car/a pony that he JUST had to have.

Me: And I hope you have cocktails for the adults at this party.

Thankfully I am bringing my laptop because while my family is so busy fighting over who gets to spend the most time with me playing with our son, I will be blogging from the West Coast.

But our little man is awesome. He is both charming and smart. Here is why everyone who has ever known me would now rather spend time with our two year old:

Last week, our Little Man was playing on his drumset before we left for school. (Merci, to my older brotehr for such a super quiet toy). I told Little Man we had to go.
He said, "I'm just playing the beat, Mommy. "

I applauded his efforts and told him we still needed to leave.
He said, "No Mommy, I just need to play the beat. I have a song in my soul."

A song in my soul? Our son is TWO. Technically, 2. 5. My eyes actually welled up a bit and I wanted to tell him he was a FCKING ROCK STAR but that is not appropriate AT ALL so I settled for giving him a big hug.

He moved me.

And it reminded me of one of my birthday gifts last month. This gift was all my son's idea.

This is when you feel overwhelmed with love for another person, especially when that person is part of you.

Precious boy.

And yes, Little Man, you do have a song in your soul. And I love that you are so loved.

  1. What is the term for 3 GIANT steps beyond 'cougar'?

I am now the official (whatever the above term is plus) groupie in waiting.

When little man is 22 and I am 72, I'll be clamoring with the best of them to get aboard his tour bus. Yes, I will.

  2. What an amazing little guy! You touched my heart with that story.

I hope you have a great time!

  3. OMG that is so freakin' gorgeous! What a little looker too! You are in all sorts of trouble later on girl.

I was getting all concerned at the beginning of post, going away, excuse me, leaving us!!! Oh but you'll still blog, ok!

  4. In case JohnnyMac hasn't got the order of things this is it in descending priority.

    1 The Kid(s)
    2 The wife
    3 The pets
    4 The plants
    5 The house
    6 The husband

Nature has it's own laws of placement, displacement and replacement.

  5. That little man DOES have a song in his soul! AND some serious rhythm! Hubby IS in a band so I know these things. You need to make sure he is in all kinds of music classes because he truly has a gift. No joking.

That's how rock stars are made.

    I love him. And you.

  6. Aw. Now that even affected misanthropic old me. And who can fail to love that line “No Mommy, I just need to play the beat. I have a song in my soul.”?

My two nieces came out with some classics, but nothing to match that.

  7. Great video. What a cutie! Have a great time at home. Being home just does something for the soul. Hope you get to relax.

  8. Does he need a roadie? I'm big and strong and can separate M&Ms. I have the tats and can affect a terribly accurate British roadie accent.

  9. This post and video totally made my eyes well up and heart burst with love too! Just thinking that I have these (although maybe not the song and definately not the drum kit!) tender moments to come.

Ok, so I may be in a bit of a vunerable mood today, but still.

And I totally relate to everyone being more interested in your Son than you. Whenever I get phone calls from friends and family the first question is "How's the little man?", Never mind how I am ;P

  16. Have a great visit! No offense, but by the looks of the personality driven little Mac, it's quite no wonder your family considers you 'second tier'!

  19. What an awesome video! Thanks for sharing it with us. And in my book, your son is one eloquent little dude with the "song in my soul" statement. How cool is that? I can feel a destiny of greatness emerging!!!!

Best wishes to you during your travels, and here's a toast to you, that you'll snag some of that attention while your in Seattle. And that you'll be offered a nice cocktail or two so that you may enjoy your trip from the adult side of life.

  20. You are so right that these visits are no longer all about you. Being Nana to 2 Mensa grandsons,7 & 8, my daughter knows who will get the first hugs when I get near them. We miss you as well, but nothing feels as good as that little body wrapped in our arms. They have always been "My babies". Daughter # 1 so kindly gave birth to them for me. The younger of them, on my Birthday.

I also bought that grandson, # 2, his first guitar. I love the rocker boy too. Yours has the flair down good.

  22. If I ever do decided to have children someday, I will consult you on the gene pool-issue as in "can I get some of those super cute genes that you obviously have to bring forth an adorable little angel like that"

    ReplyDelete
  23. He is SO cute...hope you have a great time!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Cute kid. They are all so cute at that age. I think 3 is my favorite. I remember when my 3ish daughter came out with a 5 syllable word one day.

Thanks for sharing the video. It really brightened up my day.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's awesome. And he is adorable, too!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would like to add my 2 cents about this... Yes this happening to me right now... HOWEVER these people need to be around more often like today when son woke up at 6:30 AM.... If they loved their precocious genius so much......Anyways I am just tired.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good thing you recorded his obvious first steps to Rock Star stardom... you can show him this when he's a teenager.

What a sweetie! Have a great time! I am glad to hear the laptop is also making the trip.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Little man has one BIG heart and some BIG dreams ahead of him! Friggin' adorable!

Oooh, Seattle! Don't be sleepless while you're there. I have never been so I'm delighted to live vicariously through you and your adventures.

Tell Pearl Jam hello for me. Eddie and I go way back.

  30. I have a song in my soul.

    Good deal.

My kids have songs in their souls, too - I have a drummer and a guitarist. It isn't so much quiet around here. I'll miss it when school starts.

    Noisy toys rock.

(FWIW, my word verification is 'chill')

  31. oh. my. gosh. Your song is SO cute and is TOTALLY a rock star!!!

I've always wanted to visit Seattle as Frasier is my ALL-TIME favourite show and the city always looks so cool. I'll get there someday. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. That is so funny! I always wonder where they come up with these things.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What an adorable video!

You'd better watch out - I think you do have a future rock star on your hands! (And you can totally show that video when he becomes famous)!

  34. Keep it up, little man. Chicks dig guys who can play guitar and sing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Have an awesome time and a cocktail for me ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Being privvy to the inside "previously unreleased" version of his steps to super-stardom, I have to say two things:
    1. I am SO GLAD you shared this with everyone; and
    2. I am really greatful to have a ringside seat for all the upcoming events of the P.O.G.'s gigs that will surely emerge. He is HUGELY talented as I have witnessed firsthand!
You and JMAC have a great time at home - I'll sure be missing all of you!! Had to choke it back this morning rading this post...thanks for that!! Be safe!! Have a GREAT visit!!

  38. That is so cute! Can you blame the family for loving him so much? Now that I have a nephew I really don't spend that much time with my sister. I am all about playing with my little monster.

    Have a fansmashingtastic trip!

    ReplyDelete
  39. That video is just RIDICULOUSLY ADORABLE. Okay, I DO want to have a kid now. Yours makes me want one again (yes, I go back and forth depending on whose kid I'm around).

Have a great time while you're home. Sounds like you might get some good 'you' time in there, with all the attention on the Little Man, huh?

    Be safe and enjoy... :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have a wonderful trip! I had no idea you were raised there. I have family there also.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my gosh that is the cutest thing ever! And with the infamous drum set! I am so going to get my nephew some drums for christmas!

And you are right. Every time I talk to my sister, it's all about my nephew. When she arrives at my home, I run to pick up Logan and leave her there alone on the doorstep.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm pretty sure Little Man is going to be famous some day. And we can all say we "remember when..." Have a super-fun time in Seattle!

    ReplyDelete
  43. What a sweetie-pie!
And I totally know how you feel... my husband and I joke (but are totally serious) that my mother needs to stop saying she is coming by to see "us", because we all know who she's really coming by to see :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Awww, oh my goodness, he is SO ADORABLE. And I love the guitar playing-- future megastar in the house! Hehe. Although I hope you still got a cocktail.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh he is so cute.

I totally understand where you are coming from. But if you think it bad with one kid just try showing up to family functions with triplets. I am still trying to get the heel markers off my face from a function in July. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love Seattle. I can't wait to get to go back there someday!

    ReplyDelete
  47. First, your little man is adorable!!
Second, I do the same thing when people have babies, you disappear and the children are the highlight. It's not that we don't love you (parents), it's just that the children are new and fun. That sounds bad but, really, it's not.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Awwww, I miss my nieces and nephews so much....

    ReplyDelete
  49. look at him...he's already got that strumming motion down!
I hear ya...my family is more concerned with seeing my kids than me too. However, since my three drive me bananas most of the time, I'm happy for a few minutes to blog in peace! ;) Have a great trip!

    ReplyDelete
